Chinese Export Articulated Koi Fish Pendant | Gilt Silver Filigree, Turquoise Cabochon Eyes | Mid-Century
Mid-century Chinese export articulated koi fish pendant in gilt silver filigree. Turquoise cabochon eyes, fully articulated body, moveable fins, and a hinged jaw compartment — originally functional as a vinaigrette or pomander holder.
The filigree technique here — known as Hua Si — dates back to China’s Warring States period. Fine silver wire is hand-pulled, twisted, woven, and individually soldered to create the layered scale work across the body. This level of craftsmanship was historically reserved for court commissions and high-status export pieces.
Both turquoise eyes intact. Gold wash shows warm aged patina with no major losses. Articulation moves freely. Jaw compartment opens and closes securely.
The koi is one of the most significant symbols in Chinese decorative arts — the word for fish (yu 鱼) is a homophone for surplus (yu 余), making it a traditional emblem of abundance, prosperity, and good fortune. Koi specifically were associated with perseverance and often given as wedding gifts.
Approximately 2.5–3” including bail.
